How do you deal with an older sony walkman?

I'm having difficulties with my older sony walkman...Meaning whenever I try to add a song it says I don't have enough free space on it even though there's only 51 songs! I know this is not the limit because I have had up to 164 songs on it. What can I do to fix this?
