I am getting a divorce. My husband told me he does not have much money. Should I have just divorced him?

My husband rents a small apartment. He became a doctor in America and got his US CITIZENSHIP after marriage. He filed for a divorce last year after 5 years of marriage. he gave me a shock. He did treat me horribly. we do not have kids together because he did not want kids. he blames me for our marriage breaking up. i was and still am unemployed. I did everything and more than what was expected of me. He said I did nothing for him or anyone. He called me crazy. he has hurt me so much. What can I do? If he does not have that much money or properties then what can he give me. He is an MD--medical doctor and I do not know how much he earns. Should I ask for anything of him? he is currently becoming a Cardiologist. He says he will go back to India after he has completed his fellowship in cardiology. Is he fair? I think he is a fraud.
